At one point, Narcissus was cursed so that he could not look at his own reflection. after witnessing Narcissus crudely reject the love of others and leaving a trail of broken hearts, Nemesis, the goddess of revenge, lures him to a pool of water while he was hunting. He sees his own reflection and falls in love with it, unable to gather the will to leave his reflection. Either by committing suicide or starvation, Narcissus eventually dies uttering "Oh marvelous boy, I loved you in vain. Fairwell!", leaving a flower in his place.
